Next-generation pop/R&B singer-songwriter Maya Simmonds, born in 2000 in Toronto, began her musical journey as a form of self-expression and healing, discovering that singing helped her overcome a childhood speech disorder. After moving to Belgium in 2007, she developed her artistry alongside producer Chris Hewett, gradually shaping her identity as Maya Maunet—a name meaning “to be heard.” Deeply rooted in soul and jazz, Maya built her reputation through live performances and covers of artists like Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, and Ella Fitzgerald. She has shared stages with artists such as Judith Hill, Max Giesinger, and Martha Da’Ro. In 2021, she released her debut single Can I Stick Around, receiving regular airplay on Luxembourg radio and performing it with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxembourg. More recently, Maya gained wider recognition through The Voice France, where her soulful performance captivated both judges and audiences. A graduate of York University with a BFA in Vocal Jazz, she is now focused on creating and releasing new, deeply personal music.
